The idea of lithium sulfur batteries has been around for a long time, but previous examples could not do enough charging cycles. The breakthrough that materials company Lyten came up with is to use graphene, a carbon material, which improves the durability of lithium sulfur batteries. Celina Mikolajczak, the CTO of the battery division of Lyten, says these cells are half the weight, are 40% cheaper to make and could be out as early as 2027.
