Hello, I’m John McElroy, welcome to Autoline China, the show that covers some of the most important new technologies in the automotive industry.
BMW USES X-RAY TO IMPROVE QUALITY
BMW is using more powerful x-ray technology at its Research and Innovation Center in Munich, Germany to improve quality control even in the early stages of development. The more powerful computer tomography or CT scanning system allows the automaker to look at vehicles on a micro level. So, it’s able to check welds, rivets and even see how adhesives are affected by temperature without having to tear the vehicle apart. Or it’s able to tell if an absent-minded worker left a bag of pretzels on the driver’s floor. BMW says it spent 2-years developing the system and it’s the only one in the automotive industry.
INSPECTING ENGINES WITH MINIATURE ROBOTS
We’ve shown you some wild technology in the past but this could be the most bizarre yet. Jet engine maker, Rolls-Royce Holdings, which is no longer affiliated with the car company, is developing miniature robots that help with engine repair. Called SWARM robots, they’re about 10 millimeters in diameter and are deposited into the engine by a “snake” robot. They’re equipped with small cameras that provide live video feedback, to inspect hard to reach areas of the engine. This allows an engine to be inspected without having to remove it from the aircraft, which saves both time and money. The University of Nottingham and Harvard University are also working on the project.
Still to come…will American’s buy a brand Chinese brand car?
BOSCH CREATES PREDICTIVE ROAD-CONDITION SERVICE
Current automated driving systems are pretty sensitive, forcing the driver to take over at the first hint of uncertainty. But the supplier Bosch is working to make those self-driving features available for a longer period of time. Its created a predictive road-condition service that provides weather data to the automated system, so it has a better idea what’s in store ahead. This way the vehicle can adjust its speed for the conditions or have a better idea when to hand the controls back over to the driver. In the future, Bosch says connected vehicle data will be added to the service to make it even more accurate. The road-condition service will be rolled out worldwide in 2020.
WOULD AMERICANS BUY A CHINESE BRAND CAR?
Would American consumers buy Chinese cars? A new survey says at least one out of four Americans say yes. The car shopping website Autolist did the survey. Of the over 1,550 people it talked to 28% said they would consider buying a Chinese brand vehicle. And no surprise, 40% of those people said price was the leading reason why they would. 35% said they wouldn’t want a Chinese vehicle because of questions over reliability, safety, and a lack of a dealer and service network. The survey also showed that the least likely to consider a Chinese vehicle, own an American brand vehicle, while owners of Korean vehicles were the most likely. But this does highlight some of the areas Chinese automakers should focus on and the areas where they need to work harder.
Coming up next…how automakers could free up billions in capital.
HOW AUTOMAKERS CAN FREE UP BILLIONS IN CAPITAL
Sergio Marchionne, the former CEO of FCA said too many automakers are duplicating what the others are doing. For example, General Motors makes 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engines. So does Ford, so does FCA. They make automatic transmissions exactly like the others.
Most car owners can’t tell you what engine they have. Or how many gears are in the transmission. They don’t care, just like they don’t care who supplied the steel, who made the headlamps or who makes the seats. All they want is a good-looking, comfortable car that drives well, is efficient and reliable.
GM, Ford and FCA spend billions of dollars every year duplicating what the others are doing. By spinning off their powertrain operations and merging them into a new company, they could free up billions of dollars, just like Sergio suggested.
And that wrap up this report, thanks for watching and please join us again next time.
