Hello, I’m John McElroy, welcome to Autoline China, the show that covers some of the most important new technologies in the automotive industry.
STEERING RACK WITH SHOCK ABSORBER TECHNOLOGY
In 2013 safety analysis in the IndyCar racing series, showed that hand and wrist injuries were on the rise. One factor was molded hand grips had gotten too large, not allowing the driver’s hands to come off the wheel easily. But that has since been addressed. The other was due to the violent rotation of the steering wheel during a crash. So, the director of the engineering and safety department came up with a new steering rack that has internal technology similar to a shock absorber. In the event of an accident, the steering rack hydraulically “latches,” transferring most of the load to the steering arm. IndyCar has been testing the new steering rack this year and it’s been so successful that it could get adopted as soon as the 2019 season.
FORD ADDS STREET SMARTS TO BICYCLE JACKETS
Ford’s Smart Mobility Innovation office in London just developed a smart jacket for cyclists. The jacket has turn signals, brake lights, a smart phone pouch and haptic vibrations for integrated navigation. The navigation system sends riders onto bicycle-friendly routes rather than busy roads. Ford’s “Share the Road” campaign ties in with the smart jacket, as the company aims to increase harmony between cyclists and motorists. Right now, the jacket is still a prototype and Ford is in the process of securing a patent for it.
Still to come… Continental develops technology that can make buttons appear out of nowhere.
CONTINENTAL SHOWS MORPHING TECHNOLOGY
The supplier Continental is showing off what it calls “Morphing Technology,” which helps get rid of buttons on the dashboard to make it look sleeker. The material has the look and feel of artificial leather and as soon as the hand of the driver nears the surface, illuminated, 3D buttons literally pop-up. Capacitive proximity sensors under the surface of the dash recognize your hand and reveal the controls. The buttons provide a brief pulse to confirm the function and disappear after the driver pulls their hand away. The Morphing Technology is a combination of sensors, electronics and electromechanics.
NEW HUB MOTOR READY FOR MASS PRODUCTION
Hub motors could revolutionize the way cars are designed. Hub motors are electric motors mounted in the hub of the wheels on a vehicle. If the batteries or fuel cell is mounted in the floor of a vehicle, it frees up tremendous space for the interior. Elaphe is the name of a Slovenian company which claims to be the global leader of hub motors. It’s showing its latest system in a BMW X6 and says it’s ready for mass production. Each motor is mounted between the rim and the brakes and can produce up to 100 kW. To put that in perspective, the Chevrolet Bolt EV has one 150 kW electric motor. In-wheel electric motors also get rid of friction losses in the driveline. Theoretically, hub motors could even eliminate the steering and brakes.
Coming up next: autonomous cars are not the only things that could disrupt the automotive industry, so could passenger drones.
PASSENGER DRONES COULD DISRUPT THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY
Automakers are getting more and more interested in passenger drones. Mercedes Benz invested in a German company that’s developed a passenger drone. Geely bought an American passenger drone company. And Audi showed off a passenger drone that it designed.
Now Aston Martin and Rolls-Royce are getting involved. Aston Martin’s drone is powered by a hybrid-electric system, is autonomous and can hold 3 adults. Rolls-Royce, the jet engine manufacturer not the car company, uses a gas turbine engine to generate electricity for six electric propellers. It can carry 5 passengers, and has a range of about 805 kilometers.
These passenger drones are still under development, but they’ll start pilot programs around 2020. And it is fascinating to see that a number of car companies are so active in this new technology.
And with that we wrap up this episode of Autoline China, thanks for watching.
