Hello, I’m John McElroy, welcome to Autoline China, the show that covers some of the most important new technologies in the automotive industry.
FORD’S “WEATHER FACTORY”
Every automaker has environmental chambers to test for different climate conditions, but Ford has a new test facility that can do things we’ve never seen before. It just spent 70 million euros at what it calls its “Weather Factory” in Germany to simulate nearly every kind of weather condition. One room can produce heavy snow fall with temperatures down to negative 40-degrees. Another pressurized room can simulate altitudes of up to 5,200 meters, which is like being high up on Mount Everest. Other rooms can generate heat of 55-degrees Celsius and produce winds of 250 kilometers per hour. But at the end of the day, it’s all about developing vehicles that can stand up to all types of weather conditions.
LOW-COST SURROUND-VIEW CAMERA FROM MAGNA
360-degree surround-view camera angles are especially helpful for parking big SUVs and pickup trucks and soon they’ll be even more useful. Most current systems just show the vehicle from a bird’s eye point-of-view, but the giant supplier Magna and semiconductor maker Renesas have a new 3D surround view. In parking and low speed maneuvers, it allows drivers to toggle between a number of different camera angles. This is a low-cost solution that is meant for entry-level to mid-range vehicles and the two companies say a European automaker will be the first to adopt it.
Still to come, Dongfeng and Dana create electric axles for commercial trucks.
BOSCH STOPS MOTORCYCLES FROM WIPING OUT
Advanced safety systems are common for cars, trucks and SUVs and now the supplier Bosch is working to bring the same technologies into motorcycles. It’s adding radar for bikes that allows for automatic cruise control, blind spot recognition, and collision warning where the rider gets an audio or visual signal if another vehicle is dangerously close. Bosch has also developed a solution that greatly reduces the risk of wiping out. If a sensor detects sideways wheel slip, a gas is vented through a nozzle that provides a lateral force to help keep the motorcycle upright and on course. Bosch says it’s like a magic hand that helps keep the bike upright and interestingly enough, the gas accumulator they use is plucked from passenger car airbags. And that should help keep down the cost.
DANA CREATES ELECTRIC AXLE FOR TRUCKS
China is pushing buyers into electric cars and that includes commercial trucks. That’s why Dana, along with its Chinese partner Dongfeng, are launching a pair of electric axles in China for class 3 to 6 commercial trucks. One axle weighs around 304 kilograms and has a motor that produces 174-horsepower. The larger axle covers class 4-6 trucks and features a water-glycol-cooled electric motor with 318-horsepower and 221 pound feet of torque. It weighs 370 kilograms. By mounting the electric motor directly to the axle, Dana says it got rid of 100 kilograms, because it gets rid of the drive shaft and its couplings. The first application will be a Dongfeng battery-electric truck.
Coming up next…now we know why the auto industry is so interested in mobility services.
WHY AUTO INDUSTRY IS INTERESTED IN MOBILITY SERVICES
I sat up and paid attention when Softbank, the giant Japanese conglomerate, invested $2.2 billion in Cruise Automation, which is owned by General Motors. That gave Softbank nearly 20% of Cruise.
That makes Cruise worth over $11 billion. Keep in mind that GM has a market cap of $62 billion. But Cruise is a start-up that hasn’t even started providing services yet. Imagine being worth $11 billion before you even open your store.
And that tells you why automakers, suppliers, tech companies and investors are so keen to get into mobility services. The payoff could be massive.
But that wraps up today’s report, thanks for watching Autoline China.
