On the topic of General Motors said that the start of Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV production at the site will be postponed until late 2025. With EV demand slowing the reasons giving were “better manage capital investments” and implement improvements in an effort to make the new EVs more profitable.
Thinking about GM’s recent purchase of a giga casting company. I wonder if they are going to reengineer most of the design under the skin to do the things that Elon Musk talked about where they create several sub assembly lines and use giga castings to make sections of the vehicle with much more automation (reduce number of high cost assembly workers) and then have a very short main assembly line to bolt the sub assembles together. As part of the reengineering process, they should incorporate the latest design improvements like heat pumps, inverters, and light weighing. All this should reduce cost and increase profit margins.
